Today I am throwing my old sneakers away. They are like old friends to me, especially the pair on the left. This thread is in their memory.

Thanks for your support, I decided to throw them out tomorrow. I hope some homeless person would still find some use for them...

Yeah this is not a way to handle the Russian winter.
I don't remember having decent shoes that could resist both the salt on asphalt and the disgusting moisture ever in my life. And I never had a proper winter jacket in my life. This is why I'm sick every winter.

Well, I bought them in 2017 right off the factory in Leningrad where they're made, it was a way to celebrate the end of my hitch-hiking trip so I pretty much walked 350 kilometers (half of the way) to buy them :DDDD They're the most comfortable pair of shoes I had, I suppose normally they'd have another year or two of life but just like the American I'm a flat-feeted heavy walker so I kill shooz quickly. Besides, you're obviously not supposed to wear them through late autumn and winter, so if I only wore them in proper seasons they could easily last a decade.
I want another pair, the actual price in factory store is 30 bucks which is fantastic for a leather sneaker of this qualuti but resellers in other cities demand twice the price so I bought a pair of generic Chinese sneakers. I will make sure to kill them quickly so I can buy this rarity of a decent Russian product once again

I'd be wearing them for another 3 years but they made my mom sad so I did it for her.

i never got the "shoes equating to status" thang tbh
i dont know if ive ever looked at another persons shoes in my entire life
RussiaBernd2020-08-28 01:33:56 · 6yNo. 100178reply
It's not exactly about status, it's about the idea that a man is always supposed to be clean and dirty shoes are a sign of being uncultured rather than poor. Which is true, I believe. And the shoes were in a shape where no amount of cleaning could make them look clean.

My mom does the same. „Oh bernd look at your shoes, they are falling apart, get new shoes, you look like a bum, you never care about anything, if you would dress better you would have GF, dont you want GF“

What moms fail to understand is that destroyed shoes are peak /fa/.

I have a hard time parting ways with old clothes of mine. I feel like I have no fashion taste whatsoever.
MoscowBernd2020-08-29 12:06:03 · 6yNo. 100286reply
A worn-out item is an item with history, I try to wear things that can develope a face of their own while serving for years. That's why I mostly thrift for stuff made in white countries instead of buying chinese crap that lasts a season and then dies an ugly death.
The only downside is while it's easy to build a wardrobe full of high quality things with history for pennies, thrifting for boots is kinda yucky and I couldn't ever find outstanding stuff, and getting a resoleable qualuty boot is a matter of 500 bucks which is a bit of a problem for an ordinary Russian :^DDD Made in USA/Europe sneakers are also egspensive as hell but at least somewhat affordable if I save up for like 2 months, picrel a made in Germany sneaker, you can smell the qualuti but that's 350 bucks.
