I'm trying to get into supplements.
One thing that annoys me to no end is that most available products mix all kinds of stuff together. I have a pretty good idea what I want to take and what not. I have a cheap multivitamin with some essential minerals that covers the baseline of what everyone should take just to be safe.
Then I want to add some collagen for joint health and muscle growth, but all products that are easily available to me are beauty products for women or joint supplements for old people that not only contain collagen but also a bunch of other shit that's either scientifically proven to be useless, not for me or another dose of vitamins, even though I already get them from my multivitamin. I don't want to waste money or take triple the recommended dose.
Similar with protein powder. I saw some cheap vanilla flavoured protein powder at the grocery store and decided to try it out without looking at it more closely. That was a mistake. Since it is pea protein it is marketed for vegans and has a bunch of shit added that vegans usually don't get from food. I'm not a vegan. But even if I were this would be annoying since I wouldn't want to take my other micronutrients with the protein powder.

I get the idea of sourcing purified/refined single components, but as you already noted salesmen tend not to sell that. And actual single biochemicals can get really expensive. I get the feeling the main reason why supplement salesmen don't like selling single active ingredients is exactly because of silly laws and regulations regarding sourcing such substances for actual biochemical labs, and to avoid having to file paperworks on purity of their products (which they probably can't reach anyway), they rather just mix shit together and sell like that.
So.
What I want to say is, I'm much more oriented towards finding easily procurable sources that contain what you want: e.g. want collagen? Skin and tendons will thicken your sauces with it (and also taste good). Just build your lifestyle around optimising what you can get from what's already around you.

Supplements are a waste of money, because most people living in the developed world get everything they need from their diet (unless they have weird eating patters like vegans).
The only thing that most first-worlders are deficient in are iodine (because of fluoridated water and lack of salt). I put a drop of iodine in my water bottle once every couple of days because I don't eat enough iodine rich foods.

Meh, it depends. You do get enough from your diet for normal lifestyle, yes, but for specific training regimens, you might want to up your stakes a bit. And then there's also some weird specific effects you can get from overdosing, e.g. niacin flush (to get superhuman blood circulation)

That's just not true, although it is a popular talking point. There are a bunch of studies that justify my desire to supplement certain things and my doctor said it might be a good idea, too.
Just to give one example: The majority of people in the developed world are deficient in vitamin d. This was sometimes in the news during the pandemic and you might have heard about it.

B12 deficiency is also fairly common, but that one actually is caused primarily by memegeterian and adjacent diets
Tho I'm not sure if D should count, given that the major source of D is supposed to be biosynthesis and not dietary (same as cholesterol)

if you have white skin and go outside often, you don't need Vit D. Northern Europeans evolved white skin to get Vit D naturally. The reason why Eskimos are yellow and Nords are white is because eskimos lived by the sea and ate lots of fish (which was rich with vitamin D) while Nords lived inland and had to get Vit D from the sun. Selection pressure meant that continental europeans evolved to get Vit D on their own.
If you have an office / WFH job, then vit d might be necessary, but if you go outside frequently it is unnecessary.

Aging (in the post 25 yo sense) is cell degradation due to dna damage
There are enzymes in the body called sirtuins that work to counter dna damage and allow cells to remain healthy for a greater number of cell divisions
NMN converts to NAD+ in the body. NAD+ a nutrient that is needed by the sirtuins to function, but the body's reserves of it get depleted as you age, making it useful to take it as a supplement

yes, exactly
to die while having liver and lung still intact is a waste of liver and lung
of course, keep some moderation - don't waste one organ way too early, that'd be a waste of all other organs

I'm only warning against oversaving your body to the point you could have had your body take much more, and regretting it in the end, since the one thing you can't control is - your heart will still go weaker with time from constant use.

Wow, after taking all those supplements your piss must be really expensive.
I don't really want to go into those supplement shits. Nutrition is the most controversial area in science and tbh I have never ever seen a healthy person who pops those pills. Usually they are people who have fallen under some multi-level-marketing scam. I only follow Pentti Linkola's guide to nutrition.
"If you don't eat you will die, if you eat you will live. As a clarification it should be said that particles that hurt your teeth and gut, like nails and glass shards, should be avoided"

During the Corona habbenings of early 2020 when the tale of the town was that Corona had like 10% mortality rate i bought like 20kg of whey protein powder, as it's the most optimal survival food. Whey protein + multivitamin pills + seed oil + some salt, and you won't be dying or even being that unhealthy.
It will taste like shit and you will be kinda miserable, but technically it's enough to keep you alive and going.
Now they are all expiring.
>Whey protein + multivitamin pills + seed oil + some salt, and you won't be dying or even being that unhealthy.
By this i mean you won't be having any immediate medical conditions due to deficits. It's not "healthy eating" in the long run, as those seed oils are pretty much 100% saturated fat, but if it's the apocalypse, you'll be doing pretty fine.

(Whey) protein supplements have loads of sodium. Huge amount. It isn't on the label among the ingredients, because it isn't added into the powder but it is a byproduct of the production process. High sodium is useful for the producers, because it keeps the water in the muscle tissue causing them to look more puffy, and the bodybuilders (who are/were the main target audience) see a quicker muscle "growth".
This information comes from a study which tested over 100 protein supplements, and checked if the ingredient labels are true. Somewhere I have it dl'd, I had links, but this was in ~2013, so most likely I can't give exact source now.
