In case you missed it Gab has had some drama over the past week. The story goes something like, Andrew Torba (owner, CEO) voluntarily turned over user information to the FBI on a Trumptard who lost his cool by saying things like "I hope the FBI dies" or something like that. That comment being made in the backdrop of the FBI raid on Trumps' home. I'm sure you've seen that news by now. While it's not a direct threat, it's still arguably legal speech. You could obviously condemn such a statement but that's not really my point and why Gab's userbase is up in arms right now.
The reason you might hear about this is because Torba quite possibly handed over his own user's information WITHOUT a warrant. Merely, he voluntarily offered it without putting up much (or any) of a fight. That doesn't strike me as a man with a spine who truly fights for free speech when he folds without even being asked. Torba has been routinely called out on this behavior and he has been nuking criticism over the past few days. It's quite sad.
To any bernd thinking about Gab you should treat it like a honeypot, in a way. With the recent development over this guy (see pic) you could best argue that's the canary in the coalmine. If you're looking for a suggestion then it's obviously the Fediverse so poa.st would be a good starting point for your tw*tter-like social media.
