Depends on yourself. Mine grows super fast. But I have friends who have to really plan it out over a few months because theirs grows really unevenly.

When I want beard, I just stop shaving, then after a month I will give it a number 2 length trim with the clippers to even it out and then let it continue to desired length. I've never let it grow more than 5cm though.
