Why almost all Latin American countries have compulsory voting?

Is this a thing of former colonies?

What is the advantage to them of forcing the whole population to vote and then fining the ones who didn't vote?

DDR had compulsory voting as well. They even sent police to your house to escort you to the poll site, if you didn't come of your own free will.

Nope, they helped each other in ordinary life with small things. Solidarity among the population was much higher than it is nowadays. I realize that that was the case because of the oppressive government.
