This was my second attempt to make this thread. On the first my internet broke down and I had to wait for 5 minutes until it worked against. I hope my internet connection stays stable for the rest of the evening.

Update on my car jack:

I have a scissor jack and the threads of it are completely fucked as well. I can't repair it because I don't have a tap big enough to recut the threads.

Call a tow truck and transport it to a repair shop where they have proper tools?

Good attempt and good for trying, but in this case it might ve better to give the task to professionals

My car is on the third floor of a parking garage. I think it would be pretty hard for a tow truck to get a car out of there. Also I only have tomorrow to do it and repair shops don't operate on weekends.

 

My current plan is to go to the next hardware store tomorrow and hope that they have a car jack there. If not I will get some threaded rod with nuts to try to repair my current one. Also I'll try to get some high temperature sealant.

Then I will try do another attempt to get the drain plug out of there. Failing that I will soak some sealing band used for plumbing in sealant or epoxy and wrap that around the lose drain plug. This should seal my oil pan enough that I can drive my car out of the parking garage and park there somewhere.

Then I will order a new oil pan and replace the whole fucking thing.

Learning by failing is surely an effective method to learn new things. But it is not a pleasant one.

do you have mobile mechanics in germany? some dude shows up in a truck or van and fixes up your car. it's very convenient and weirdly enough often cheaper than regular auto shops here

Germans have the ADAC which is a club with yearly fees. When you are member and are stranded somewhere on the road they will come and either get your car going against or tow it to a repair shoppe. I don't know how much of actual repair they can do to your car on site.

Yes that is what I did. But to no avail.

 

Went to the construction shoppe in the morning and bought ans hydraulic car jack and some 5 minute epoxy for metal that is supposed to withstand up to 150°C.

 

When I got to my car it turned out that the cheap hydraulic car jack can only lift it up by 10 cm which is no comfortable working height but whatever. Tinkered around with the drain plug for a while and then gave up and then sprayed everything with brake cleaner and slathered the drain bolt and the area between it and the oil tank in three coats of the 5 minute epoxy. Waited for ans hour to let it dry, filled in the old oil against, and then drove out of the parking garage and parked on the street. No oil leaked but I put a plastic container underneath the car in case it starts to leak.

 

Now I have to find out how to replace the oil pan, order the parts and next saturday I will drive the car into the parking garage against and replace the oil pan.

Pretty happy with the result. I thought it might even be good enough to drive with my car around until the new oil pan arrives but I think if the oil pan gets hot and cold a couple of times due to me driving around might probably weaken the connection between the glue and the oil pan. Also I can't be sure whether some of the threads broke off inside the oil pan and might damage anything if it gets pumped around in the car so I just leave the car parked until I can fix it properly.

Apparently some oil pans are sealed to the motor with high temp red silicone. This would have probably been a better sealant for my drain plug. But they didn't have something like that in the construction shoppe. Can't find a gasket for my car so I'll probably have to get this as well.

that's more like roadside assistance. I get that with my car insurance. mobile mechanics actually do full fledged repairs (within reason ofc there are jobs you can't do without a lift or whatever)

Silicon pieces will clog the whole oil circuit in the motor.

This will be my learning-by-failing lesson, were you learn not to apply too much on the oil pan. But the oil gets through the filter before it gets into the motor. So any leftovers in the oil pan should land in the filter.

 

From what I've watched about car repairs on youtube 80-90% of all car repairs consist of identifying the part that is borken, ordering a new one, and then replacing it. Accordingly most of the time you have to wait until the part arrives. How does a mobile mechanic deal with this? Or are they specialized on certain models and have all the parts for this on hand?

It will clog up the metallsieb in front of the oil pump.

According to the service manual I have to apply a continuous bead of 2-6mm thickness. Looks like a walk in the park to me.

Only things that might go wrong that I can think of:

1. oil pan screws are rusted so hard that I can't get them out

2. while breaking off the seal of the old oil ban I destroy something

3. while trying to place the new oil pan with wet sealant back to the motor I mess up and sealant goes everywhere.

I just ordered a new oil pan, sealant, and a new car jack.

I'll also get an oil valve that I can use to replace the oil drain plug on the oil pan. Then I will never have to remove the screw again. Just open the valve to drain the oil.

Oil pan is only 60€. That's only marginally more expensive than the stupid oil pan repair kit that I couldn't use.

Stuff finally arrived. Tomorrow after lunch I will begin my third attempt to finally fix my car. Hopefully I won't have to walk home against.

 

Posting information from service manual so I can repair it properly:

sealant bead: 2.0—6.0 mm

tightening torque: 8—11 N·m

Car finally works against. It was a massive pain in the ass to get the old oil pan off because it was glued on so well. I pretty much demolished it getting it off. Also not happy with the new car jack at all.

For the last two weeks I walked about 1.5h every day because of no car. Yesterday I weighted myself and it seems like I lost 1-1.5kg of bodyweight.

 

is this something you made up or did you experience something like that? I feel like I have too much squeeze out. But I feared not putting on enough so I went with the 6mm bead. On the other hand I let the silcone cure overnight before filling in the oil so the internal squeeze out should stick to the inside of the pan pretty well.

In the last two days I drove around for a bit to check if any light pops up but it seems fine. Yesterday I checked oil and it was at the same level as I filled it. At the end of the week I will remove the cover on the bottom against and check the oil tank for drippings but I'm pretty confident that everything is sealed.

When I removed the old oil pan and lay below the engine with oil dripping down on me I really cursed myself for doing something like this myself and not pay a professional but in hindsight it was an adventure and it made me more confident in repairing future problems on my car myself.

It will take a while until it dries out and starts crumbling.

I just removed the cover under my car and checked the oil tank against and found a couple drops of oil on the inside of the cover also there was a little wetness on the oil tank. It was above the drain plug so it does not come from that. The seal does not seem to be 100% water-proof.

 

It's not nearly enough that I would redo the procedure and I could just leave it like that and it would be enough to just refill the oil when I do the oil change every year but then it will be a constant source of annoyance whenever I think about my car.

 

Soon coming soon I will have to change summer tires to winter tires and will replace the breaking fluid and when I'm doing that I will probably remove the whole cover on the bottom against, try to find the leak, and smother it in silicone from the outside. It never ends.

I know. Also it is the carbon version and I bought it during Corona when bike prices peaked. It is the most expensive item I own after my car.

I feel like I can't nearly ride it as good as it deserved to be ridden. But I'm getting better..

Update:

Decided today to look under the car against and smear silicone on any leaks that I find.

 

Turned out that no more oil leaked from the car. Oil tank was dry all around. I guess when I refilled the oil some of it missed the funnel and then slowly ran down along the engine and alongside the oil pan in the week after my oil change.

 

So my replacement was 100% perfect and my car is fixed now.
