I never understood why having a navy is so desirable.
All the important things countries posses are on the land, and if there was a ship to come, you can just shoot it down lol they are big and slow.

Yeah, but not only aircraft carriers. Submarines, and more specifically those used to carry nuclear missiles give you the advantage of launching an attack at a shorter distance and depending on the depth they can't be detected by most radars.
