This problem has been bugging me for years, but I can't live with it anymore and I really want to change something.

I am over 30 years old I've been sitting in front of computers for over 20 years and I never learned 10 finger touch typing. I never felt the need, because I was 'fast enough' (I am not a stenographer)

At the same time I am always embarrassed when someone sees me using a keyboard and I have to admit that I tend to have a typo here and there when programming and using special signs and this is starting to annoy me more and more.
This is of course also not the end of the world since I am neither a competitive programmer and at least for me, when programming typing happens in bursts, but errors are errors and I will have to correct them.

I started doing QWERTY exercises on ratatype.com and such, but it's mostly a waste of time because I am unwilling to do the switch and start to stop using my system and force myself to use the proper 10 finger technique.
Here and there I go for it to see how it feels (it feels shit), for example when entering my password in my PW manager and menial tasks like terminal commands.
The PW manager and related thing is where it gets my blood boiling, because my muscle memory just kicks in and I don't have to think when hammering it 'my way'

More and more I am thinking I should just try and learn another keyboard layout altogether, because I don't have to forcefully unlearn 'my QWERTY way'

Switching to a completly different layout will set me to 0 and I can start learning from the ground up. I won't be even able to look at my keyboard.
I was thinking about Dvorak or maybe even programmer Dvorak(pic3).
But, after trying it out a few hours ago I realized I will have to invest more time into planning and reconfiguring a lot of my workflow (window manager, vim and so forth). I need at least a sheet of paper with the dvorak layout printed on it next to me. (And I am obviously lazy as fuck right now, but I could imagine doing it. Sooner or later.)

What would you do? What should I do?

How on earth have you used computers for 20+ years and not managed to learn 10 finger typing? This makes no sense.
GermanyBernd2023-02-18 17:08:59 · 3yNo. 255861reply
Because I am lazy and was always fast enough. I can type without looking

Isn't this how most 90s kids learned typing? You play computer games and have to type something really fast like in Counterstrike or Wow and you just find a way to use like 4-5 fingers or whatever

I never went to secretary school nor did we learn it in school (although there was one time, but I was faster than the rest so the teacher didn't care how I type - which in retrospect was terrible of him. But less work for me and I probably wouldn't have cared)

Deleted my whole post again when I pasted a link. Sorry, I can't deal with this piece of shit imageboard engine anymore.

I feel your pain. I always expect this to happen here, so I wrote this (and other posts) in a txt file before posting

I didn't learn 10 finger typing in school, it just came naturally. I would have expected the same thing to happen to anyone else, I really have no idea how you could spend that long using a computer and not have adapted to it.

I always cringe when I see colleagues that sit in front of their pcs all day but have to look at their keyboard to type.

Sounds really smart to change the keyboard layout to force yourself to learn different ways. Maybe try the english layout. It should be more convenient for coding because they have the important characters where we have the umlauts so you don't have to use alt gr while coding. But it might be different enough that it helps you relearn.

Also play typing of the dead to learn to type under pressure.

I can't backup my claim with data, but I think you are probably the exception.
GermanyBernd2023-02-18 17:16:03 · 3yNo. 255867reply
He already uses qwerty (the "english layout")

Second try. Learn Dvorak as a fun project, but not as a way to learn 10 finger typing (https://yewtu.be/watch?v=U-cDo4v5m0g). I had a similar thought today to learn 10 finger typing and I will probably do it with the help of some web guide and daily exercises (currently I'm a 6/7 finger typer). Also why the fuck do you use QWERTY as a German?
GermanyBernd2023-02-18 17:23:57 · 3yNo. 255872reply
Because US layout is way nicer if you program and need special signs regularly.
To be precise I am actually using AltGr-WEur layout (which is a variant of the US layout)
I made a thread a few months ago about discovering AltGr-WEur

Yes, but all the keyboards are qwertz in Germany, so I imagine it to be annoying.
GermanyBernd2023-02-18 17:33:53 · 3yNo. 255876reply
Trying to type.

I don't know, it just works.

Now I will type really fast, perhaps I will make some tpos... nmow I close y eyes and tyope whatever comes to my mind... I also never learned 10 finger typing and just played video games and had to learn how to type there... I just followed my instinacts and for most of the time it worked out prett fine....

OP, I'm probably sames as you hahaha

I mostly use my own keyboard or bring my laptop. But it is indeed a bit annoying when I have to do stuff at my mom's laptop

Colemak is better and more similar to qwerty
GermanyBernd2023-02-18 18:25:03 · 3yNo. 255899reply
I've heard about it. For example shortcuts like CTRL+C/V will still work, because those keys have the same position. I also came across Colemak DH which moves the D and H keys

What do you need it for? I also can't do proper 10 finger typing, it's like 70% of keys I do using my left hand but it's always fast enough. I actually was taking part in some sport programming contests back in the university, got some decent results and it never felt like my typing speed was a problem there so I don't see anything to be embarassed about here.

>sport programming contests
Elaborate please. Sounds interesting.
NetherlandsBernd2023-02-18 19:04:30 · 3yNo. 255920reply
I mean these competetive programming contests with very limited time, don't remember the proper names.
Anyway industrial programming isn't about typing speed. I see a lot of people with some custom layouts and IDE hotkeys and plugins to type faster but 90% of your work time is thinking so what's the point in investing so much in the other 10%?

How well did you do? Did you win?
FinlandBernd2023-02-18 21:39:24 · 3yNo. 255937reply
The trick to 10 finger typing is to place your wrists so that each of your fingers can reach all those keys that they are assigned for in the system. Train your fingers to find the right key without looking at the keyboard and don't move your wrists at all when typing

There're series, like uni level, local level, regional and global ones and the competition gets, well, harder. I never get to the regional level but I got some places at the lower ones...
