Germans often think their language is useless and provincial compared to English, that nobody outside Germany speaks German. But in fact, especially in Eastern Europe many people know German or at least learn a bit in school.

>only 8% in Bulgaria
I call bullshit, more than 8% of Bulgarians work or have worked in Germany

German speaking Bulgarians are all in Germany probably.

> able to hold a conversation
Be that as it may, what are the numbers regarding the ability to engage in a serious discussion?
GermanyBernd2021-12-28 16:27:50 · 4yNo. 130792reply
I don't know the source of the data, but there are only two possibilities:

1) It is self-reported, which is more likely. In that case, the percentage of people being able to hold a serious discussion will be lower than just for "conversation". How much is hard to say, since the definition of these things varies widely and the self-assessment of people is also questionable.

2) It is based on testing. But then the usefulness of the data is similar to (1), since we don't have the definitions the test used.

I don't see how German is provincial compared to English. English spun off from German.
Certainly there are a lot more obscure languages in the world than German.

Elsaß alone is 3% of France's population

The average German doesn't consider these things. They just see us as small compared to America and China and know that English is the international lingua franca.

I live near the border and actually met french people that knew German well enough to ask directions and one time I had a small chat and they said they were from Alsace going to vacation. Most of the time they only speak French, though. I learned some words to be able to give directions.
