Do you look people in the eyes whenever you talk to them? Are you supposed to?
Uruguay Bernd 2024-08-03 14:59:49 ⋅ 2mn No. 316013
If you have social anxiety, low self esteem, or autism, eye contact might not make much sense to you. Looking someone in the eyes shows confidence, helps you understand non verbal cues, makes you appear more interested and honest, and creates a better impression.
Germany Bernd 2024-08-03 15:22:26 ⋅ 2mn No. 316014
>>316013 I find it distracting to look someone into the eyes when I'm talking to someone. I feel like I can better concentrate on what I say when my brain does not have to process what my eyes see.
Hungary Bernd 2024-08-03 16:15:33 ⋅ 2mn No. 316018
Depends on the situation. Most of the time noone stares directly in the eyes constantly, even with a face to face talk on the side of two tables. When just chatting with a pal on the sidewalk then surely not.

>>316008 I either make zero eye contact with people (which is good when you want to be left alone) or very intense, prolonged eye contact there is no middle ground as I understand, you're supposed to look people in the eye and then occasionally look away, but I never know when to do that and it feels weird

To me eye contact is just part of the speech. I don't really like it but when I want to highlight something I'm saying or make sure person did hear what I just said correctly I look them in the eyes.

>>316089 > What goes on in your head while you make eye contact? basically this: am I staring? oh my dog, I am staring, cock and balls (or other inappropriate stuff that pops into my head), why did I just glanced down at this person's lips, I read somewhere that's weird, did they notice? COCK > Are you interpreting the expression of the other person? I suppose I learned to recognize people's emotions and reactions to an extent, but 90% of the time I talk to someone face to face is for professional purposes, so it doesn't really matter I feel like I'm some kind of freak or an alien left stranded on earth

>>316089 > How do the eyes of a person tell you if he understood what you were saying? The facial expressions usually show that and these are easier to read when you look them in the eye. And often people are too shy to say "I didn't get it, could you elaborate" directly but they give you this begging gaze.

>>316158 It's more that I'm not sure online tests can be effective. For example, in the last one there were several questions like "are you good at small talks?" or "can you keep a conversation going?". I answered "yes", but that's a learnt skill for me, I spent years trying to be better at this stuff which probably biased the results (but unlikely changed my autism or absence of it). **Also I don't think I actually want to know it...**

I think the autism-spectrum-quotient focuses heavily on social retards and does not consider the other sympoms of autism that much. The other tests seem better imho.
